INTRODUCTION: Often patients will use non-technical, or general, terms to describe their condition. These may not be wholly accurate from a medical viewpoint, but are commonly used to refer to a particular condition.

Remember some English terms that may be very familiar to you as a doctor will not be familiar to your patients. If you use technical terms, try to explain them using non-technical terms as well. For example, “You’ve experienced a myocardial infarction; most people would know that as a heart attack.”
